Silverstone Auctions Buying Guide

The golden rule for anyone hoping to buy at auction is to thoroughly inspect the lot you are interested in before bidding, as no warranty or guarantee is given with anything that is sold. For this reason the auction venues are open for viewing prior to each Auction (please check times).

All bids are final and non-revocable.

Bidder Registration

You can bid at auction either in person by attending the sale, by telephone, by leaving a commission bid or live, online. To meet current legislative requirements, you will need to provide proof of identification in the form of a passport or drivers licence and a recent utility bill as proof of address.

When submitting forms by post, please ensure they reach us no later than 4pm (GMT) three days before the the day the auction is due to take place.  When submitting forms by fax, please ensure they reach us no later than 4pm (GMT) the day before the auction is due to take place.

Telephone bidding

Should you be unable to attend the auction on sale day, telephone bidding will still allow you to bid live. On the day of the sale, a member of Silverstone Auctions will contact you, usually a few lots prior to your selected lots and will guide you through the process. To register a telephone bid, please complete the relevant Absentee Bidder Registration form. It is important that you provide us with alternative contact numbers to ensure that we are able to contact you on the day. If, for any reason, we are unable to contact you any of the telephone numbers you submitted, you may wish to turn your bid into a commission bid by completing the appropriate information on the form. This however is entirely optional.

Online bidding

Silverstone Auctions has partnered with Proxibid to allow you to bid live on sale day from anywhere. Registration for internet bidding is done directly on their websites. We advise that you register at least 48 hours before a sale to allow sufficient time for your registration to be approved. PLEASE NOTE - Online bidding incurrs an additional fee of 1% plus VAT for Motor Vehicles and 3% plus VAT for Automobillia.

If you have a catalogue, please ensure that you bring it to the sale as entry is by catalogue only. Each catalogue allows two people entry on viewing and sale days. Further copies of the catalogue can be purchased at the Auction.

How fast will the auctioneer go?

The auctioneer will aim to sell approximately 90 lots of Automobilia per hour and 25 – 30 Vehicles per hour.

All lots are sold on an 'as seen' basis. You may wish to bring a competent mechanic with you to inspect any Motor Vehicles on your behalf. The catalogue will describe the lots to the best of our ability on information supplied. You should, however, satisfy yourself as to the condition, age, and integrity of any lot prior to bidding as no warranties whatsoever are given in relation to any lot.

Once the auctioneer drops the hammer a contract is made and you are obligated to proceed with the purchase. It is therefore vital that you are satisfied with the condition of the lot you intend to bid upon before doing so.

Like the vast majority of auctioneers, Silverstone Auctions Limited charge what is known as a buyer's premium. Our standard buyer's premium charges are 12.5% of hammer price for motor vehicles (cars and motorcycles) and 20% for automobilia/lifestyle items. Buyer's premium is subject to VAT at the prevailing rate on the day of the auction.  PLEASE NOTE - Online bidding incurrs an additional fee of 1% plus VAT for Motor Vehicles and 3% plus VAT for Automobillia.

Any lot you purchase can only be released when full settlement (inclusive of all charges) of any invoices issued to you is received. Before bidding, you should ensure that you have the necessary funds available and are able to pay according to one of the methods set out in the Terms and Conditions.

Payments must be made in GBP. Debit or Credit cards (VISA/Mastercard) will only be accepted where the cardholder is present up to £20,000. Cash to a maximum of £5,000 can be accepted.

We are unable to accept funds from countries on the Financial Action Task Force High Risk and Non Cooperative Jurisdiction Lists.

VAT at the prevailing rate will be added to the Buyer's premium which will be invoiced on a VAT inclusive basis. If you have any questions with regard to payment, please contact our client services department.

All purchases are at Buyers risk from the fall of the hammer.  You should therefore arrange insurance and removal of the lot as follows:

Motor Vehicles

Motor Vehicles must be collected from the sale venue by the time specified in the Key Sale Information found in the auction catalogue. Otherwise lots shall be removed to storage at the Buyer's expense in accordance with our Terms and Conditions.
